Today Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky announced that she would not run for re-election. For as long as I have lived in Chicago, Jan Schakowsky has been a leader in the progressive community. She was a strong advocate for workers’ rights, the LGBTQ community, and perhaps most especially, women’s rights. Once elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1990, she worked relentlessly to encourage other women to run for office.
Schakowsky was an early and relentless opponent of the Iraq War, when it was a lonely position to take. She was one of the first political figures to identify the unique gifts of Barack Obama, and was an early supporter of his 2004 Senate campaign.
In every way that matters, Jan Schakowsky was true blue. Her leadership will be sorely missed.
